Roland Emmerich’s prowess is sailing high with his latest sensation “2012” but there’s no sign of stopping for the director as he’s eyeing a return to his previous smash hit, “Independence Day”. Back in 1996, the alien invasion themed blockbuster, “Independence Day” earned $100 million in just a week’s span, shattering several records along the way. Since its massive hit, there had been high anticipation and flying rumours for a sequel.
During the press conferences for “2012”, Emmerich announced his plans to create not one, but two sequels for the much-awaited film. He stated, “We want to do a bigger arc. “Independence Day’ was always like the king who leads his troops into battle against an evil force, and that stays like that.”
At present Emmerich has no script to work on yet. However he possesses enough foundation with a sprouting idea, a catchy title and the involvement of actor Will Smith as support. Guided by Emmerich’s veteran skills in producing mindless fun, an idea is enough to set sail another phase for the alien-invasion saga. With technological advancements soaring high since the air of the original, special effects would surely pave the way for better crafted sequels.
“Independence Way” carved the way for Emmerich as the master responsible for epic visuals and mind-blowing imagery as he pushed the boundaries of film animation. Massive explosions and blow-ups courtesy of Michael Bay in “Transformers” owe their audience appeal to “ID4” success. But no one could top Roland Emmerich’s skills in surprising and awing viewers with his end-of-the-world films as people flocked his masterpieces “The Day After Tomorrow” and now “2012”.
It doesn’t matter if the plot and characters are awfully forgetful and repetitive as long as the images of devastation live on to haunt forever. Fans of Emmerich’s works look forward to the sequel/s of the film that started it all, knowing early on that it would definitely be another creative masterpiece.
