Columbia Pictures gears up to welcome the new installment for the sci-fi comedy franchise since its last release in 2002 with “Men in Black 3”. Earlier in September, producer Walter Parkes revealed the huge potential for a third film with everyone from the cast and crew including leads Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones interested for another. However the challenge back then was working on the script. Eventually it was resolved when Madagascar’ and ‘Tropic Thunder’ scribe Etan Cohen was tasked to complete the draft of the “MIB 3” script.
Director for the previous two films Barry Sonnenfield will be returning to take over direction for the third film. It’s a good choice considering the series has earned a whooping $1 billion in global grosses under his helm. The chart topping-sales are also widely credited to Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones’ chemistry as Agent J and Agent K respectively. The duo’s attachment to the film will play a big factor to the third series as Columbia wouldn’t push through with “MIB 3” without Smith and Jones. Both stars at the moment are not committed to the project.
However THR reports that “in recent days the buzz in development circles has been that he (Smith) is now interested in returning.” For Jones, his lineup this year is long with three different projects he is set to direct and star including “Islands in the Stream”, “The Sunset Limited”, and “The Lincoln Lawyer”. If Smith agrees to reprise his role as Agent J, this would be the second sequel he would be performing as he’s also set to return in “Hancock 2”.
Sony expects to begin filming early spring on 2010.
