Stephen King’s ‘Shining’ Sequel

Stephen King’s ‘Shining’ Sequel

Prolific author Stephen King isn’t completely closing the doors for “The Shining” as he drops a bombshell announcement of his plans to create a sequel for the novel with the idea already on the works since last summer. “The Shining” is a story revolving on the Torrance family and their devotion to the Overlook hotel. Back in 1980, Stanley Kubrick transitioned the novel to the big screen. Going back to original novel, it left off with the young boy, Danny Torrance recovering with Wendy Torrance and Dick Hallorann.

In an interview at the Toronto Canon Theatre recently with Canadian director David Cronenberg, King announces that Danny’s reactions to the events at the Overlook and his use of his psychic powers were the inspirations he was drawing upon for the sequel.

Tentatively titled “Doctor Sleep”, the rumored upcoming sequel would feature an older 40-year-old Danny living in a hospice for the terminally ill at upstate New York. Despite his condition and age, he places his powers to use by guiding patients transition easier to the other side.

Despite the emerging concept, King isn’t fully committed to creating the novel saying, “Maybe if I keep talking about it I won’t have to write it.” Except for the series of “The Dark Tower”, King was never known for making sequels to his hit novels. Fans would have to wait and observe whether the concept would indeed materialize in the future.
