The Bourne Prequel

The Bourne Prequel

British film magazine Empire reports that the next installment for the “Bourne” franchise would most likely be a prequel. Star Matt Damon himself revealed during a red carpet interview for the London premiere of “Invictus” the status of the possible fourth “Bourne” film. Damon shares that though he and director Paul Greengrass are still preoccupied with plans for their next project together, Universal may be ahead of them pushing a prequel starring a new set of actors under the guidance of a new director as well. “There’ll probably be a prequel of some kind with another actor and another director before we do another one, just because I think we’re probably another five years away from doing it. We’ve got to get a script.”

Having a script on-hand is one of the important factors in the creation of a feature film. However, in order to keep the charisma of a successful franchise alive, a bankable star and proven director must be attached as well. The decision to create a prequel with an all-new cast and crew attached is a risky gamble for the proven successful franchise especially with the original actor and director still interested in returning. Hopefully, the upcoming fourth installment won’t be the demise of the “Bourne” franchise.

Speculations are being raised that the main reason behind Universal’s decision is its shaky relationship with Greengrass. After the latest instalment last year, Greengrass publicly exited the franchise due to reported disputes with the studio. Hopefully, despite the tragic history involved, Damon and Greengrass would still have another feature to work on.
