James Cameron’s “Avatar” finally beats the last record still held by “Titanic” last weekend. Today, after seven weeks at the number one spot, “Avatar” has officially become the highest-grossing film in domestic box office with $601.2 million in sales. The previous record held by “Titanic” still remains close at $600.8 million.
This day marks a historic event as “Avatar” now holds the top spot in domestic, overseas, and worldwide sales. All of these were previously claimed by Cameron’s very own “Titanic”. Tagged with nine Oscar nominations yesterday, “Avatar” is set out to make even more money worldwide.
Despite its screen success, many are still in doubt whether “Avatar” would manage to win the Best Picture Award. As early as today, some already believe that Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker” would beat Cameron’s sci-fi feature to the crown. Ironically, this tough competitor managed only $12 million domestically. If this happens, it all just goes to prove, it’s not in the numbers.
Here is now the recently updated top 10 highest-grossing films in the U.S.
1. ‘Avatar’ – $601.2 million
2. ‘Titanic’ – $600.8 million
3. ‘The Dark Knight’ – $533.3 million
