The amazing HBO series entitled ‘The Wire’ was very much praised for its frank honesty and its unflinching preciseness about some kind of war on drugs. The setting was in Baltimore, Maryland where vicious gang wars, rebel attacks and unceasing fights transpired. But this is way far from the real war going on in the city proper.
As what is seen in ‘Darkon‘, which is a documentary film made by Snag Films, Charm City is also a setting where role playing games or RPG focused on fantasy themes take place. The gamers are taken to the street to envision one area as Darkon. This is the term used to call a medieval world where gamers strategize and fight battles to emerge as a hero.
The players are combined historical re-enactment players, along with physical combat fighters and the mental strategists who love taking risks. Each of the players comes up with an alter ego and creates some pseudo lives for their own characters which are somehow have similarities with their own. For some players, the game is already a part of their lives.
These days, with how video games are causing so much distraction in the lives of many young people along with the influence of violence, it is easy to mock these people who want to live in ‘Darkon’. But they are really admirable when it comes to their sense and level of dedication and passion for the game that they love that they can give up a few weeks of their time for it.
