The Runaways Movie Review

Some critics and a few punk rock purists have raised their eyebrows when The Runaways band biopic was still in the works. More eyebrows were raised higher when the roll call of casting stars came out. Of course, The Runaways is one generalized account of the beginnings and the journeys of one of rock’s legendary all-girl band.

The movie is just filled with energetic bursts, conveying female empowerment during the late 1970’s. It was what anyone would call the sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll scene. With its cast of young stars, the biopic was an instant hit. Critics however, were hesitant to rate it if it’s any good at all. The film just ruptures the substance bubble and sways to bad attitude and music.

Directed by Floria Sigismondi, there was research done pertaining to the ‘70s rock scene, leaping from Los Angeles to Tokyo to ladle out some photo ops. The film’s pace is stimulating with ostentatious performances by Dakota Fanning, Kristen Stewart, Stella Maeve, Scout Taylor-Compton, and Michael Shannon.

The path to rock stardom is imminent in the movie and the watchers may get a dose of thrills and excitement about the rise and fall of the all-female rock band. What raised most critics’ eyebrows were, in fact, the stars that are on board for the film. It’s hard to imagine Dakota Fanning as wild Cherie Currie and Kristen Stewart as the iconic Joan Jett. But it works on its own terms. There is also the brilliant portrayal of Michael Shannon as Kim Fowley, the record manager in androgynous clothing.

The actor-musicians are seen playing and singing reasonably well or at least they’re good at faking those guitar riffs and vocal sound that Joan Jett could only accomplish. The Runaways biopic celebrates music more than anything else but does not exceed glamorous expectations.
