I don't count myself as a Beatles fan, but I do know 99% of theirsongs. The musical side of this film is quite entertaining, I think. Ofcourse, so many songs by them have been covered already. But there'salways room for one more.

However, as far as originality and creativity goes, this film hasalmost proved that there's nothing more new coming out of the MagicalFour. Their music and thoughts have been thoroughly analyzed, chewedupon, digested, tampered, re-re-arranged and demythologized. Adding tothis sad reality, Vietnam! For heaven's sake! Not that old stuff again.

I guess this flick would appeal to certain age groups. But probably notin a fresh manner. Sorry, but many of us have realized that 'Love'alone doesn't save the world, peace isn't the opposite of war, andimagining no heaven doesn't get us anywhere.

Please see above title, I have no time, energy of inclination tocomment any further on this banal, dross……..absolute freakingpants.

But IMDb demand I write a minimum of 10 lines in order to post up. I amso insulted by this film, I feel obligated to do so.

A feeble, pathetic attempt to give some visual references to classicBeatles song, no doubt for the tiresome, dreary American audience whoquite obviously take absolutely everything in life so literally. Icould not stomach more than 20 minutes so am unable to comment on howNewspapers Taxis may have appeared on the shore. One can only imagine.I would like nothing more than to take a shovel to the back of thedirector's head.

I only managed the first 9 minutes of this movie, which is a shame aseven in that short time I got the impression that it would be quitewatchable. The reason I couldn't watch, or rather, hear, any more, waspurely because of the gratuitous and heavy handed use of autotune onall the sung vocals. Even in parts where the singing was part of thedialogue, where one would expect the singing to be slightly out oftune, somebody in the production team had decided it would be best toprocess the vocals to such an extreme that I couldn't listen to them.Yes I'm a musician, and yes this is already a pet hate of mine (sooften a perfectly good vocal performance is made to sound like a robotbecause it's a few cents out), but seriously, at times the autotune isso obvious it becomes almost reminiscent of Cher's famous pop song,"Believe" (Do you believe in life after love?…) It was so distractingthat I couldn't watch the movie, which I feel is such a shame as theactors/actresses (or their voice doubles) are clearly talentedvocalists and needn't have been subject to such treatment – or at leastnot to such a degree.

I'm disappointed, disheartened and extremely annoyed. What a waste.Grrrrrrrrrrr…..!!!!

After my bad experience going to see SGT PEPPER back in the 80s, Ivowed never to go to another film based on Beatle songs. After 25years, I renounced my vow and watched ACROSS THE UNIVERSE. It is a farbetter film than SGT PEPPER but ultimately also a disappointment.

Julie Taymor is a tremendously creative director, and there are somewild visuals in this movie. Outstanding sequences include EddieIzzard's animated MR KITE, the draft board dance sequence, and theon-the-street dance with commuters and briefcases. There is no lack ofvisual stimulation here.

The problem is: when you stuff a movie with a huge number of songs, there's not much room left for plot. So we end up with stock charactersand boy-meets-girl clichés sandwiched in-between stunning musicalnumbers. I guess that's true for many movie musicals, but I guess Istill expect more. And of course, we have the whole 60s countercultureboiled down to its skeletal remains (Hippies! Soldiers! Rock and Roll!)

So: high marks to the director and art staff for keeping my eyeballsentertained, but a big snore for the writers who couldn't do any betterthan this trite plot that seems like the literary equivalent of apaint-by-number kit.

I don't think I would have liked it at a cinema. There is nothing morepleasing that watching this movie on an HD LCD, big size TV with a goodhome-theatre sound system, a highly rated DVD player(most of them arepretty good) and a clean blu-ray DVD. I think the difference isenormous. The above combination made me appreciate the stunning colors, the editing, the photography, the sound and the directorialachievement. With the help of consumer publications and internet sites, practically anyone can own a very reasonably priced video/audio system, bring out the organic popcorn, kick back, dim the lights, turn off thephone, shut everyone up, turn up the volume and truly enjoy movies theway they are meant to be seen!
