i'm not sure Tezuka would like this. the voice of Astroboy isn't right, and Hollywood thinks they know what is right. this should have been"made in japan". the actors will not like what i say, and i admire mostof the filmwork they've done in the past, but this is paydirt forothers hard work decades before and not homage enough in any way atall. i'm really sorry for saying that, but i have to be honest. maybeits good work, but NOT near good enough. the website however isfantastic! i would like to see great movies in the future from thisfine cast, but not spoiled beloved cartoons. it just didn't worksomehow, don't blame me! i will pay to see it again, because i'm anAstroboy fan. ya got trouble with that, OK, post me, or e-me.

Considering all the bad press Where the Wild Things Are is getting for not being clear in its marketing one might think Astro Boy would be an easy box office choice. Unlike Where the Wild Things Are you can take a six year old to this movie knowing it will deliver every thing you think it should. It is a Pinocchio inspired tale about a robot boy created by a grieving father who must journey through self awareness in order to find meaning and it closely follows the original cartoon in pacing, plot devices and not so subtle all be it worthy themes. But unlike Where The Wild Things Are this is not a groundbreaking soon to be classic film about adolescence in search of its proper audience. Astro Boy is simply good Saturday morning cartoon fun. So if when you get to the box office that’s what you and you’re kids are looking for by all means go see this film. It is worth the price of a child’s admission.

Every decent movie starts with the story and builds around it. Thisdoesn't seem like the case here. It feels as if they decided to make anAstro Boy film no matter what, then started on a script suitable tomake it happen. Well, this screenplay just isn't good enough. It hasnice sentiment, granted, but the story is so flimsy and dragged out itwould have been better suited to a 25 minute episode instead. Thecharacters are poorly written, many of them are just walkingstereotypes or clichés with their intentions clearly signposted; oneparticular character may as well walk around with a sign reading "I'mactually a very, very evil man" around his neck.

Thankfully there is a well-rounded voice cast to give their charactersa little bit of spark. Freddie Highmore (Charlie in Charlie and theChocolate Factory) is decent as Toby / Astro Boy; Donald Sutherland isclearly having lots of fun as the sneering uber-villain General Stone;Bill Nighy, Kristen Bell, Eugene Levy and Matt Lucas are all sufficientin their various roles; however it is Nicolas Cage who really standsout as he provides the grieving Dr Tenma with more emotion than therest of the crew altogether.

On the action front there is much to see, if not necessarily to enjoy.Although some set pieces are colossal – most notably the finale – theynever overly excite, we can see Astro Boy punching a building-sizedrobot yet it feels remarkably fake. I know, I know, movies are fake, especially animations. But the aim of a movie is to ensure we forget itis all a show, not highlight it. Still, there are lots of high-flyingacrobatics and ground-drilling antics from Astro Boy which offer plentyof amusing moments, whilst the futuristic world and its inhabitants isaesthetically pleasing.

I've never seen the original series so I can't make any comparisons, although seeing as that show was (and is) loved by so many I came outof this film scratching my head at how it could be so unspectacular. That's not to say it is a bad film, it's not, but it just doesn't haveanything that makes it stand out as a film to spend your hard earnedcash on.

    2.5 out of 5 (1 – Rubbish, 2 – Ordinary, 3 – Good, 4 – Excellent, 5 -Classic)

This was a really good movie. I really enjoyed this. Granted I’m not a fan of Astro Boy, but I still enjoyed this film. The voice actors delivered great performances. Nathan Lane was brilliant as Ham Egg, as was Kristen Bell as Cora. Freddie Highmore did great as Astro, and as much as everyone groans whenever Nicolas Cage is mentioned, he did a wonderful job as Dr. Tenma. The action in this film was great. I was never bored during the film. It had a lot of great stuff, and some funny moments. It’s a great animated film that delivers on action, great performances and awesome sequences. I had a great time with Astro Boy. I hope it does for you too.
