Dreamgirls (2006)
Fame Comes And Goes, Stars Rise And Fall, But Dreams Live Forever

Detroit, the early 1960s. Curtis Taylor, Jr., a car salesman, breaks into the music business with big dreams. He signs a trio of 18-year-olds, the Dreamettes, gets them a job backing an R&B performer, James "Thunder" Early, establishes his own record label and starts wheeling and dealing. When Early flames out, Curtis makes the Dreamettes into headliners as the Dreams, but not before demoting their hefty big-voiced lead singer, Effie White, and putting the softer-voiced looker, Deena Jones, in front. Soon after, he fires Effie, sends her into a life of proud poverty, and takes Deena and the Dreams to the top. How long can Curtis stay there, and will Effie ever get her due?

Condon's movie based on a book about a car salesman (Foxx) who breaksinto the music business by signing a trio of 18 year olds who callthemselves the Dreamettes. With the help of a washed up singer (Murphy)he jumpstarts their career, but then shafts the lead singer Effie Whitefor better looking softer-voiced Deena (Beyonce) in a move that hethinks is the logical thing to do. The film can be at times a bitidealistic, yet it has a good message, great music and very suitablescreenplay and cinematography. Its a good film, that one can watch withthe family or with a more mature crowd. I enjoyed this one even thoughinitially didn't buy the hype about the movie, but when i got around towatching it, i can see why it made the noise it did. IMDb Rating: 6.6.My Rating: 9/10

I love musicals in general and Dreamgirls is a great one. It also isvery modern in the way the musical numbers are blended into thenarratives. It's not the traditionalbreaking-into-song-when-emotions-reach-their-peak kind of thing. It'sseamlessly fitted into the story, being both the songs the charactersperform in their professional lives as well as their emotions of themoment. Look out for Eddie Murphy's brilliant performance as JimmyEarly. I did not know he could act until I saw him in this. JenniferHudson is an amazing singer as well as actress and even Beyoncedelivers both vocally and as an actress (two areas for which I hadlittle faith in her).

And in my series "people who don't like movies because they had wrongexpectations": I just read a hilarious comment from someone who hatedthe movie because "the songs kept coming". Errr, it's a musical, didyou expect songs to be confined to the credits?
