"After three high-octane rides on the street racing scene, the fourthfilm in the "The Fast and the Furious" series features a departure fromthe flashy, overblown colors, obvious CGI-enhancement, and at timesover-the-top stunts of the previous two films. With "Fast & Furious"the series returns to its roots with a grittier, more realistic leaningtone and reunites the primary players from the original film's cast ofgear-heads for more high speed mayhem. "
Ummmm No? Quite the opposite. This is why I disliked the new movie…It was TOO over the top with the fake car chase scenes. FAST ANDFURIOUS 1 was great because it was about the cars, the tuners, theculture with real driving and REAL chases and much less CGI. The secondone was horrible, just horrible. The third, with Tokyo and driftinggave me hope for the franchise thinking that they were finally doingthings right (aside from the whole high school beginning). Now with the4th and it's unrealistic car chase scenes, OVER THE TOP unrealisticfake chases *i.e. Through the mine tunnels??? WTF is that? Give me abreak. Horrible voice acting (direction) and lines were cheesy. Seemslike they were trying to add old snippy lines from the first one tomake it work, but it didn't… Busta..
They should have done away with the writers for this and given it backto Craig Lieberman or someone more into the culture of tuning cars. They had all the nice flashy cars in the movie but the depth and thetechnology was just not there. What made the first F&F work was theculture aspect of it. Which they could have EASILY incorporated. In myopinion if they did away with the fake CGI car chases scenes and putmore depth in the tuning, street races, car culture. It would have hitthat sweet spot that it needed.
If you drove around the various theaters on opening night you would seethe parking lots filled with tuner cars, every kind you can think of.Why? Because the original, and when they walked out I'm sure they weredisappointed, just as any true car fan would be, as I was.
Fourth in a franchise- wow. What are the chances that sequels everamount to squat? (maybe 50/50). Although the first movie was all aboutcars, booze, and women (but a GREAT movie w/ a kick-ass cast); thesecond movie had basically the same plot, but with new characters- alsoa good watch though; Tokyo Drift started to show weakness, and what Ithought would be the end of the run. Well, here comes Fast and Furious-fourth of the franchise, and I had doubts: The movie starts with thethrilling action right away (as did the first), but takes a turn in adifferent direction. The main key, was getting all of THE originalplayers back. Then, adding a new twist: BIG emotional issues (liketissue-box). This was not about car racing (muscle cars, big engines)-although enough to enjoy, but instead, this time the movie focuses moreon revenge, broken hearts, and dramatic scenes- as opposed to racingfor money/titles, fighting, and general b.s.. The turn-around of eventsin this movie, is what made it THE best of the "four"- in my opinion. The producers HAD to make SOME kind of changes, or the franchise wouldsurely go out on a very sour note. If you just want fast cars, nitroboosts, and fast women, skip this one. But if you're ready for someoriginal scripting, and having your heartstrings tugged, watch it! Igive this movie a 10! Also,it's been 5 years since Dom and Brian hookedup- the maturity really shows on both sides. (And there are some reallycool new "bad" guys, too!)Will there be a fifth?…..???????
I don't think this movie is meant to be a comedy, but nearly everyscene and every line of dialogue is laughable. I can't even describehalf of the things that made this movie pathetic, since I don't havethe time or desire to write thirty pages. Here are some of the mostegregiously bad aspects of Fast and Furious:
The Plot: There is a mastermind drug lord who has managed to elude theFBI for years, and he wants to move a bunch of drugs across the border. So instead of just splitting the packages into a few inconspicuous carsand bribing a couple of border officials, or simply flying them acrossthe border in a private helicopter (keep in mind this guy has hundredsof millions of dollars at his disposal), he decides the best way tocross the border undetected is to get a few neon-green andmetallic-purple race cars and drive in a pack through the salt plainsand then through a mine at 150 mph (yes, a mine, despite the fact thateach car rides is designed for street racing and rides about two inchesoff the ground).
Then when the drivers get to the location, he tries to kill all of themfor no reason. I guess the audience is meant to assume he does this sothat he doesn't have to pay them, but it's like six drivers, and thepackages are worth something around 160 million dollars, so paying thedrivers for one night's work would cost practically nothing. I guessthe director felt it was necessary to really pound it into the viewer'shead that he is a bad guy, so that there wouldn't be any confusion asto who you're supposed to root for.
Also, you find out that he's done this before, yet he somehow managedto prevent word from spreading that not a single driver he's ever hiredhas returned from the job (you'd think that in a relatively close-knitcommunity such as the "illegal street racing circuit" something likethis would get around). This is not to mention the fact that PaulWalker is still able to blend into these crime circles despite the factthat dozens of people have found out he was a cop in the last twofilms.
Dialogue: I'm just going to give two awesome examples here:
1) Paul Walker: I guess this is where my jurisdiction ends
Vin Diesel: And this is where mine begins.
2) Girl: Are you one of those boys who prefers cars to women? VinDiesel: I appreciate a good body regardless of the make. ………Girl: What do you look for in a woman? Vin Diesel: It starts with theeyes. She has to have those kind of eyes that can see through all thebullshit, to the good inside.
Fast and Furious perpetually insults the viewer's intelligence. Nearlynothing that happens in the movie is even remotely plausible. It couldbe mistaken for a very wry parody of stupid racing movies, but sadly,it just is one.
Fast and Furious is a flawed but decent action film. Director JustinLin is admirable for giving audiences plenty of action/car races butthe lack of some character development and over the top moments weighit down. However this movie wasn't the disaster I thought it would beand if you're a big fan of the original you'll probably enjoy this onejust as much. I'd say this one is on par with the original which hadit's flaws as well. Vin Disiel reprises the role of tough fugitiveDominic Toretto and Paul Walker returns too as undercover FBI AgentBrian O'Connor. Disiel and Walker are decent as the leads turning ingood performances whose characters join forces once again to take downa common enemy after the death of someone close to Dom. JordanaBrewster also reprises the role of Dom's sister Mia and she does an allright job in her very limited screen time but she isn't given much todo. The rest of the cast are okay in their extended appearances.Michelle Rodriguez returns for a brief appearance as Dom's girlfriendLetty but her role in the film is cut really short. She still turns ina decent performance though. The action, fist fights, and car races arewell executed and the same can go for the way they're shot becausethere's not a lot of shaky camera movements so you can usually make outwhats going on. Some of the action/chases do go over the top but I'mwilling to suspend my disbelief because this is a movie about illegalstreet racing after all. The story was okay but some characters lackeddevelopment but hey I wasn't exactly expecting anything Oscar worthystuff from this film. No offense. The dialogue wasn't the bestoccasionally either but the attempt by the lead actors and some of theaction/chase sequences made up for it. This fourth film in the Fast andthe Furious series really isn't that bad at least not me it justcould've been a little better. Overall Fast and the Furious has plentyof action, car chases/races/crashes, some surprises, and solidperformances by the lead actors. This film is sure to please almost anydie hard fan of the original. With it's obvious flaws aside this moviewas better than expected.
