It’s too bad this film sucked so hard… Elvis must have felt reallystrongly about this film’s message to have let them use all his ownsongs and voice them over for every character. Unfortunately this endedup looking weird to have Elvis’s music coming out of every one’s lipsynced mouths. Hopefully someday someone will remake this musical anddo it right. For the sake of workers everywhere.

Director Randal Kleiser knocks it out of the park with this musical.

Personally, I don't find the 1950s era all that interesting. All I'veseen are leather jackets, greasy hair and a superficial gangster typeof attitude with the bad boys.

But Kleiser takes all of those elements, which ultimately was writtenby Jim Jacobs, Warren Casey and Allan Carr and Bronte Woodard, and hasa whole bunch of fun with them. That translates real well on thescreen.

Also contributing to the fun and energy of GREASE are its maincharacters, portrayed beautifully by John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John,Stockard Channing and Jeff Conaway.

The music is fantastic all around. All of the songs seem to capture anera gone by.

The choreography is one of the most amazing things about this movie, and it is by the very talented Patricia Birch.

West Side Story this ain't. Yet Grease is probably more popular, withit's celebrity cast, bubblegum production design, catchy numbers andterrific joie de vivre. Danny and Sandy are the least likely of highschool sweethearts so when she turns up at his school, drama ensues asthey try and negotiate the treacherous playground politics to rekindletheir Summer Lovin'.

The almost indecently attractive central couple of John Travolta andOlivia Newton John as Danny and Sandy is truly wonderful – they notonly look good, they can sing and dance too. The spark though is theleader of the Pink Ladies Gang, (Betty) Rizzo, played by StockardChanning. Here is the imperfect leader, the female icon to which Sandyis expected to aspire if she or any other girls wants their man. YetRizzo's complicated, melancholy at having given too much of herselfaway to achieve her status. It's a great performance that gives thewhole bundle of fun some real weight. 6/10
