Get ready for something big July 20th!
Tracy Turnblad, an overweight teenager with all the right moves, is obsessed with the Corny Collins Show. Every day after school, she and her best friend Penny run home to watch the show and drool over the hot Link Larkin, much to Tracy's mother Edna's dismay. After one of the stars of the show leaves, Corny Collins holds auditions to see who will be the next person on the Corny Collins show. With all of the help of her friend Seaweed, Tracy makes it on the show, angering the evil dance queen Amber Von Tussle and her mother Velma. Tracy then decides that it's not fair that the black kids can only dance on the Corny Collins Show once a month, and with the help of Seaweed, Link, Penny, Motormouth Maybelle, her father and Edna, she's going to integrate the show.....without denting her 'do!

My daughter watches this film whenever possible (meaning, when Ifinally break down and say, "okay"). She loves it. I suppose it isalright, but I was never able to figure out exactly why I didn't reallyenjoy it. Until today.
The musical film version of Hairspray is not FUN! In the original film, all of the characters – even the bad ones – had some amount of humor ornuttiness that was really enjoyable. The characters in the musical lackthat crazy fun that made me giggle. Especially Mrs. Von Tussle. Thisversion took all of the over-the-top silliness about her character andturned her into just plain mean and evil.
Call me a goody-goody, but I prefer my villains to be fun. Watch theoriginal.

The Corny Collins Show is all the rage among high school girls, especially in Tracy's house. After meeting up with the "negro" kids, she is encouraged to try out for the show. Using her newly acquireddance moves, she's accepted. Things go poorly, however, when Tracy'spopularity grows and she tries to persuade the show to integrate.
I guess I really don't get this movie. I never saw the original withRicki Lake, but what is the point of this? The songs aren'tparticularly memorable or good, John Travolta's role as an older womanis pathetic, and the rest of the cast is just alright. ChristopherWalken does a fine job as usual and Amanda Bynes is sexy, but I didn'treally see anything that made this film sustainable.
Now, aside from the bad songs, what's the point of this movie? The plotfocuses on integration in the early 1960s… but there's no historicalmessage here, and the moral of the story is that blacks and whites canlive together in harmony. In today's world, this lesson is just oldnews. Sure, racism still exists… but the fact this movie can existand have an interracial kiss and not be enough to even raise eyebrowsshows how pointless the point is.
I have no idea why you would watch this. I watched it on a DVD importedfrom Iraq that was bootlegged, complete with people laughing at scenesthat weren't funny. I'm glad it came bootlegged from Iraq, because hadthe person who showed it to me actually purchased said film, it wouldhave been a waste of cash. I mean, again, Amanda Bynes is hot (pigtailsand lollipop), but that's this film's only redeeming quality.

I saw the Ricki Lake version of this in my childhood and was extremelyexcited to see this one. I really was impressed with the cast andthought, even though I had not heard of Nikki (the lead), surely theywould not place someone in this position that wasn't going to bestellar. Huh, well you win some you lose some Hollywood. I can say thatwithout a doubt she was awful. Her voice was whiny and young, shereally had no acting capabilities that I saw. Really I feel as thoughall her co-stars had to carry her through the film. I was sitting inthe theater thinking, where did the casting director go wrong? Didhe/she just look for the fattest, shortest youngest girl he/she couldfind? Because if so, then he/she succeeded, this is definitely a short, fat girl who looked as though she was still in middle school while herco-stars were in high school. Furthermore, I have heard this actress(as I use the term loosely) says that people should feel comfortablewith themselves at any weight. Well my dear, I wholeheartedly agree, one should feel comfortable with themselves, but one should also livehealthy as well, ie: exercise and healthy foods. I don't mean anorexia, but healthy. Honestly, this girl doesn't look healthy. But that is whatthis specific character is stereotyped for in this film. But that alsodoes not mean there are not a plethora of girls that fit thatdescription who have actual talent. In essence I feel as though if youare a primary character in a film you should be able to act and sing,if the part calls for it, she can do neither, which lead me to the lowscore on this movie. Sadly, had they cast someone else it probablywould have been a great film.

This movie had NOTHING to do with the original plot of "Hairspray" ittotally missed several key points in the movie, and looked like a verycheap re-make of a wonderful film.
John Travolta playing the part of a Tracy Turnblad's mother, was initself one of the worst roles Travolta has done.
The movie left out one of the most important key elements of which whenTracy Turnblad invented "The Roach."
It was a classic flop in this person's eyes.
Could not have been worse.
Maybe a re-make can be done in a couple of years, re-casting and makingthe movie into something it once was……..outstanding.

Ok this movie I am not seriously getting I mean it’s ok but my mom I think she likes it but I have a BIG problem with it. 1. I can sing and dance better then that, 2. This movie doesn’t make that much sense, and 3. They totally ruined my huge love for Zac Efron. So tnak god I haven’t seen this movie since 2008
