Indigènes (2006)

Indigènes (2006)
The true story of World War II's forgotten heroes

Algeria, 1943, through Italy and France, to Alsace in early 1945, with a coda years later. Arabs volunteer to fight Nazis to liberate France, their motherland. We follow Saïd, dirt poor, an orderly for a grizzled sergeant, Martinez, a pied noir with some willingness to speak up for his Arab troops; Messaoud, a crack shot, who in Province falls in love with a French woman who loves him back; and Abdelkader, a corporal, a budding intellectual with a keen sense of injustice. The men fight with courage against a backdrop of small and large indignities: French soldiers get better food, time for leave, and promotions. Is the promise of liberty, equality, and fraternity hollow?

Wow, I was expecting this terrific flick as was it was nominated forbest foreign language film at the 2006 Oscars. Unfortunately what I sawwas a very mediocre film that just didn't work. I felt the script wasreally trying, but in the end it was very incomplete as well asincompetent. It is a real shame that these men that died for theirsupposed country France, is going to be remembered partly because ofthis poorly constructed film. I have seen many good and many bad WW2films in my life, and this one is just plain in the middle. Their isreally nothing that truly stands out to make someone want to see this.Do not bother watching this. There are too many good WW2 films outthere, and this is just not one of them.

But in the end I decided to write my real and frankly bothersomereaction to this film. All I could think about during this entire filmwas Muslim fanaticism. I have developed such a hatred towards theMuslim community that it shames me. I would not have had this feelinghad I watched the film before 9/11/2001 I suppose. Now do not get mewrong I have almost the same revulsion for Christian Evangelicals whoanxiously await the rapture. I know that Muslim fanatics wanting Jihadonly comprise about 10% of their population, where about a third ormore Christians are Evangelicals. They are both insane in theirinterpretations of their great books of worship, and I consider myselfa Christian by the way. I just happen to know what a metaphor and anallegory are. I had little empathy for the characters, I am ashamed forthis. So the film disturbed me, but not in all the way the talentedfilmmakers and actors intended for me to be disturbed. The world isdeteriorating. This film hammered that home to me. I had much moreempathy for the Japanese soldiers in "Letters to Iwo Jima", and theywere our enemies in the film. The film depicted the plight of Muslimsin WWII. Damn, I wish I cared more.

Well, it really is a very interesting and good make war movie… Butwhat army in this world (a regular army of course) can accept and use asoldier that have just ONE ARM!!!???

Said, if you notice, only have ONE arm.

    PLEASE!

In what the producers are thinking to include in the cast an actor WITHONE ARM ONLY?

A soldier, in order to fight and survive, NEEDS ALL HIS BODYFUNCTIONALLY!!!

This detail, that I don't now why nobody notices in others comments onthis page, rest a lot of respect to a movie that can be very good butTHAT detail.

A very Strong Contender for the Oscars.

Well after all the nominations for the Oscar's foreign language moviewasn't bad at all. The Lives of otheres Pan's Labyrinth Water

And now the Brilliant "Days of Glory".

Well Days of Glory is a war movie. And I LOVE WAR movies tremendously.

This movie reminded me a lot about the Hollywood HIT –Saving PrivateRyan. But still this movie still WORKS very Effectively.

Its well directed well acted, The characters are MULTI-Layerd. Its Sadand Tragic Obviously.

Well it's a 10/10 for all the WAR movie lovers.

And truly one of the very best movies of 2006.

French entry for best Foreign Language Oscar this year is the story ofmen from the French North African colonies who sign up to fight forFrance against the Germans and have to face discrimination as well asbullets.

Good, but not particularly great look at an untold chapter of theFrench history of World War 2. The problem here is that the film almosttries to cover too many facets of the difficult lives of the men thatsome of it seems to have been reduced to short hand or cliché. While afew of the main characters stood out as individuals, a few, thebrothers or the guy with the girlfriend, seemed no be less than fullydrawn. The film also suffers in that the final battle seems to havebeen lifted from Saving Private Ryan in certain ways. Don't get mewrong this isn't a bad film, its just a good film that I think couldhave been better, Worth a look if and when you run a cross it.

(The Lives of Others and Pan's Labyrinth were rightly the front runnersfor the Oscar. This was a nice choice, but really doesn't compare)
