Typical, threadbare backwoods slasher crap, which proves that the wellseems all dried up, has a group of young adults being murdered one byone by a lunatic matriarch's incestial offspring mutant twins and herequally nutty sheriff son.
Mama Lake(Pat McNeely, under a thick southern accent, all dementedsmiles) wishes to continue the family line and uses the death of herhusband, by a shot gun blast to the head directed by their sonChuck(James C Burns), the sheriff, to lure granddaughtersBrielle(Kelsey Crane)and Kelly(Kelsey Wedeen)with the idea of apossible hotel inheritance. Along with her sensitive boyfriend Ben(JimDevoti), his college chum Bill(Alex Quinn), Bill's gal Amy(VanessaViola)and Kelly's pal Tanya(the yummy Malea Richardon, all too willingto shed her shirt), the group head onto the backwoods Lake hotel andestate against the advice of drunken father John Lake's(DanWoods)advice. Soon, Mama's mutant offspring begin killing the Lakesister's peeps, and find that the plan in place is for them to bareChuck's seed and keep the family tradition continued.
Nothing original here folks, kids running for their lives in the woodsas two mutant monsters, straight out of "Hills Have Eyes" or "WrongTurn", chase them down, mutilating them. Most of the violence isoff-screen, and you know who will survive and die. This slasher doesnothing to separate itself from the countless number that have came outsince the 80's heyday. If anything, "Lake Dead" is far minor to eventhe tamest entries of the 80's. Stuff like "He Knows Your Alone" or"Graduation Day" are just as hard. I mean you do get Richardsonremoving her shirt and seducing Bill, before getting a pickax lungedinto her skull sticking her to a tree. But, the make-up for the facesof the mutant, silent, skulking killers are cheap and unconvincing, especially when one of them gets bashed in the head with the butt of ashot gun.
I gave it a 4 because I felt the camera work was polished enough, andthe film moves along well, but if you are looking for slasherfireworks, look elsewhere.

The organizing department behind the After Dark Horrorfest clearlydidn't base their movie choices on plot originality; otherwise "LakeDead" never would have made the final selection. This is a remotelyentertaining little effort, but quite possibly also the most clichédhorror movie I ever watched and it's derivative of at least a dozengenre classics, including "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (original andremake), "Friday the 13th" ,"Psycho" and "The Hills have Eyes (originaland remake as well). Every prototypic twist you expect to happen in abackwoods horror slasher really does happen here, and at the exactmoment you predicted it too, and every stereotypical character youanticipate to make an appearance also really does make an appearance atone point or another. Personally I have a high level of tolerance forthe use of dreadful clichés, but if you're exclusively looking forhorror movies with innovating and daringly creative formulas feel freeto skip this one, because it features absolutely nothing you haven'tseen a hundred times before. The plot primarily revolves on twoattractive blond sisters, Brielle and Kelly Lake. Their last name iseither a lack of scripting inspiration or a truly lame pun, becausethey actually inherit a lake and complementary lakeside motel somewherein the middle of hillbilly nowhere. The girls gather a group of hornyfriends and decide to go camping in the area they inherited. Needlessto say the testament was only a trick to lure the girls back to theirfamily's roots, where they're required to continue an uncannily bizarrefamily tradition. There's a revival of backwoods/inbred redneck horrormovies going on lately, but somehow these newer films can't accomplishthe raw and nihilistic atmosphere of their 70's colleagues. "Lake Dead"tries hard, but the film never evokes the slightest frights and noteven the explicit gore has a shocking impact. The bloody make-upeffects are nifty, but there's too little variation in the characters'deaths and the film definitely also needed a couple of authenticallyperverted gimmicks. Incestuous sub plots and maniacal old ladies don'tupset anyone anymore nowadays, so "Lake Dead" is actually rather softby today's standards. The film stars an impressive number of sexychicks (Kelsey Crane, Tara Gerard, Malea Richardson…), but I sincerelydoubt long and fruitful careers are awaiting any of them. Oh, and nowthat our list of little complaints is quite long already, I don't thinkthe titular lake actually qualifies as a lake. It's more like anover-sized pond, if you ask me.

"Lake Dead" is an average slasher B-movie and has an unoriginal storythat I have seen many times: "The Hills Have Eyes", "Wrong Turn", I cannot count many movies with stories similar to the original "The TexasChainsaw Massacre" plus a collection of clichés of the genre (nakedwomen, friends surrounded and under siege by psychos etc.). Even theincestuous relationship among relatives is not original – "TimberFalls" is better and better. But entertains, and my vote is six.

Three sisters, upon learning that their Grandfather that they neverknew has recently died and left them a motel, decide to take a roadtrip with some friends to the property not knowing that some deviantlunatics are awaiting them there.
Imagine "The Hills have Eyes" and "Texas Chainsaw Massacre". Nowimagine if those films had no wit, no finesse, and were deathly boring.OK now you have a good idea what to expect if you're forced to endurethis crappy little film. Easily one of the worst of the second crop of"8 films to die for" that I've seen thus far (I've seen 4 of themincluding this)

I think this movie is getting unfair treatment. It's not one of the bestAfterdark Horrorfest films, but it definitely isn't one of theworst. The acting was actually good and not just horrible like it is inmost B-Movies.The script is actually quite new and fresh, for a movieof this standard. It was also very entertaining to watch, and while Idid find the ending EXTREMELY stupid, most of the material in this filmdidn't bother me.It was good, and I enjoyed watching it.The charactersdon't stick to you like they should, and there were a few flaws withthis movie, but no movie's 100% perfect, and you definitely shouldn'tsit down to watch this movie expecting to be.I liked it, and it'srating is too low if you ask me.I recommend it if you've liked all theothers, because it is a fine edition to the series.

My only problem with Lake Dead was that I wanted to see just a few moreclichés. Yes, I'm being sarcastic. This film was BAD. Bad, Bad, Bad.You've got all the elements of every crap horror film ever made: Stupidcharacters, predictable villains, girl's running and falling down, theinbred family, a secluded motel, the killer is still alive at the endof the film, and people who don't kill someone when they have thefreakin' opportunity. If the is the best Horrorfest has to offer, Indiehorror is in big trouble. I'm not sure if I'll be watching these nextyear should a follow-up happen or not. Oh, and the acting was terrible.End of review.

Wow. This movie is painful. Unfortunately, the best performance comesfrom the former Reality TV star. The acting is awful. I kept gettingthe feeling that this movie was made by a few guys who wanted to getsome chicks naked, play with guns, and screw around with fake blood. This movie is what gives the horror genre such a bad stigma. It strivesto be camp, but only succeeds at being terrible. To make matters worseit's completely unoriginal. The guys that made this seemed like theyjust wanted to recreate some of their favorite slasher horror scenes, then just threw a couple of rape scenes in for that extra shock factor.I'm two into 2007 Horrorfest, and I have yet to be impressed. Maybethey changed judges because this movie is nothing compared to any of2006 8 films. Don't watch this movie, it may ruin your day.

After their grandfather is violently killed, three dysfunctionalsisters and their friends take a vacation to the old man's hotel on thelake, a part of their inheritance. Once there, however, they're stalkeddown by a group of murderous psychopaths who have taken up residence inthe grandfather's former home.
With a plot reminiscent of a great '70s Italian slasher (like Bay ofBlood, perhaps), I was very much looking forward to this. As usual, theposter was pretty cool, but I still didn't have my hopes set high.Lucky for me, with hopes set low, there's less room for them to fallwhen I'm inevitably disappointed. First off, the biggest flaw with thefilm: The acting. I just don't get it. There are thousands uponthousands of simultaneously talented and attractive actors/actresses inHollywood and beyond that wouldn't refuse a role in a theatricallyreleased horror flick with a $2.5 million budget. Instead, we get areasonably attractive cast without enough talent to fill a proverbialthimble. The writing is terrible and unoriginal, and the dialogue isworsened with these actors. The setting, however, is absolutelybeautiful at the southern California ranch in Santa Clarita.First-timer George Bessudo worked well with the film, creating somegood suspense and utilizing some cringeworthy gore. Unfortunately, teamed with the amateurish script and embarrassing cast, it turned outto be a rather muddled mess. The script & acting cannot be made up for,and the majority of the film feels like a subpar combination of TheHills Have Eyes, Cabin by the Lake (remember that one?), and any lameteens-in-the-woods horror with Rob Zombie's Michael Myers as thekillers. I'm left with just one question to ask: 'Where did the other$2.4 million go from the projected budget of $2.5 million? Booze &hookers? If so, I would've asked the latter to replace the currentcast.
Final verdict: 2.5/10. Dreadful!

I have foolishly viewed far too many of these "8 films to die for"DVD's, from both the first go-round & the second. I think that perhaps"Lake Dead" is the nail in the coffin of my interest in these films. There were a few goodies in among the crap, like "Reincarnation", "TheAbandoned", and "Frontiers", but as for the rest, well, utterlyforgettable with little in the way of any redeeming values.
Three girls inherit a hotel from their grandfather that they didn'tknow was alive. Their father may well be a drunken fool, but he atleast tried to protect them from the knowledge of grandpa's existence. Why? Well, because there were some unsavory family ties that he didn'twant his daughter involved in.
And how unsavory were these ties? Well, grandpa gets it at the verybeginning of the film, when he decides enough is enough, apparently, although a little late, I'd say. The girls, of course, head off to viewtheir inheritance in a big RV that belongs to an old frat buddy of oneof the daughter's boyfriends. Also along for the ride is a friend ofone of the daughters, of the female persuasion. There is a bit ofdismay expressed by the RV owner's girlfriend, since her boyfriend hascheated on her numerous times, and he's not done yet, you can bet.
When they reach the hotel they're greeted by the shriveled manager, asweet old lady who really isn't all that sweet. And after tangling withsome deformed looking locals they're picked up by the nice sheriff, whoreally isn't so nice. And then it's sort of revealed that the girls mayhave a few family ties with these folks and they're due to keep thefamily line going.
I guess there's not a lot of good things that I can say about a moviewhere the highlight is a guy giving his mom some tongue…I won't saywho it is but if anything in this movie was scary, that was it.
An abysmal piece of work, not to be bothered with. 2 out of 10.

Despite its low budget lake dead proved to be a thrill ride and theoverall appearance seemed to add to the drama. Some of theconversations between the cast i thought sounded like my partner and ichatting away, or i thought mmm missus would say that… combine thatwith all the one liners that were present and it seemed to add analmost comic element to the proceedings. I also felt that the sound wasall over the place but you can only ask so much from an inexperiencedcast and production team.
All in all an enjoyable romp with a Freudian twist.
I'll give you £10 towards the next film
