Directed by Callie Khouri (best known for writing the famous RidelyScott film "Thelma & Louise"), Mad Money tells the story of three womenworking at the Kansas Federal Reserve Bank (though the movie was shotin Louisiana) who work out a system to steal money that is about to beshredded. Obviously, stuff happens.
Mad Money is far from being the best heist film out there. Recentefforts such as After The Sunset, The Italian Job, The Thomas CrownAffair, Entrapment or The Ladykillers are all much cooler. But just asSteven Soderbergh's "Ocean's" series is extremely overrated, thiswidely panned film is quite underrated. Actually, though it is centralto the plot, the movie doesn't really focus on the heist element thatmuch preferring to stick with character interactions and light comedy. Here also it's far from the funniest movie out there, but the humor ispleasant and harmless.
The acting is pretty good all around. Diane Keaton is certainly betterhere than in her horrible performance in the previous year's Because ISaid So, and while some may find baffling that Katie Holmes chose thisover The Dark Knight, she certainly does a better job here at playing aditz than her uselessness in Batman Begins. Who knows? Maybe she justdoesn't like Batman, maybe she wanted a role that would center more onher, maybe she just loves Thelma & Louise and is willing to have alower paycheck, which, being married to Tom Cruise, she can totallyafford to do. Queen Latifah is her usual self and it's always cool tosee Ted Danson and Christopher McDonald (even if it's little more thana glorified cameo).
The movie has flaws yes, and shouldn't really show up on anyone's top10 or top 200 list. The flashback narration doesn't really work thatwell and the ending is pretty ludicrous, but what the hell it's just amovie folks. I don't think anyone involved in the making of Mad Moneydeclared that this movie will radically change your views on life. It'sjust simple harmless entertainment, something pleasant to watch if youstumble upon it.

I cannot recommend this one. Barely worth renting for 2 dollars. Icannot understand why people make films like that, totally mediocre inevery sense. I had little hopes even before seeing it because itcollects "talents" of three actresses that absolutely annoy me, forvarious reasons: Q. Latifah lacks acting talent and especially comedytalents, but is often cast in comedies just because she is black andfat. And she always plays the same role. Katie is hot but she sold hersoul and body to the Scientic Church and Tom Cruise for cash and fame, and I cannot even grasp how anybody can respect her. And the mostannoying of them all: the "look how slim I am and my a""e looks nicedespite 90 years of age" Diane Keaton, who even refuses to change theway she dresses to fit the film roles, who like Q. Latifah playsbasically the same person every time.

This is an enjoyable enough movie to watch. It's not outrageouslyfunny, although it does bring quite a few smiles throughout and morethan a few chuckles. Its strengths lay in a very strong cast (headed byDiane Keaton, Queen Latifah, Katie Holmes and Ted Danson) as well as anintriguing story that is worth watching.
Essentially, Bridget (Keaton) sees her comfortable, upper class lifefall apart when her husband (Danson) loses his high paying job andthey're left saddled with huge debts. To try to make ends meet, Bridgettakes a job as a janitor at the Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank, andwhile she works there and watches the operation, she concocts a schemeto rob the place of old money that was about to be shredded. Sheconvinces two co-workers (Latifah and Holmes) to join the plot and thestory goes from there. The most interesting part of the movie waswatching the various characters react to their new found wealth.Bridget is the cold-blooded one who succumbs to greed. Originally justwanting enough to pay off her debts, once she accomplishes that shewants to keep going. Latifah is the cautious one, constantly warningthe others not to spend too much or people will start to wonder. Holmesis the free spirit who seems to want in on this just for the kicks andwhose husband (a good performance from Adam Rothenberg) ends up going abit crazy with the money and gets the IRS suspicious. Danson'scharacter was very interesting. Once he discovered the plot he wasn'tenthusiastic but did nothing to stop it, but never seems totallycomfortable with it either. All he seems to want to do is go back towork.
The biggest problem for me was the ethical perspective. No one seemedto have any concerns that they were doing anything wrong. There was noreal sense of guilt, and there were no particularly seriousconsequences for anyone, even though they did get caught. In the endthe moral of the story seemed to be that if you can get away with it,it's OK. I had a few problems with that. Still, it's fun and a pleasantmovie to watch. 6/10
