  1. Howard Schumann Says:

Reminiscent of the quirky, offbeat films of Alfred Hitchcock, Mother isan intense, witty, and engaging psychological thriller with enigmaticcharacters that do not just populate the screen but are vitally alive. In one outstanding scene that will etch itself forever in your memory,Hye-ja attends the funeral of the girl her son is alleged to havemurdered. Although besieged by distraught family members who think herson is a murderer, she has the fortitude to look them in the eye andproclaim “my son could never do something like that”. Although “barkingdogs don’t bite”, this woman is one “mutha” of an exception.

This murder mystery/psychological drama is about a young man whoappears to be somewhat mentally challenged (somewhat autistic?) who isaccused a murdering a teenage schoolgirl in a village in South Korea. His mom, in a fairly stellar performance by Kim Hye-ja, sets out toprove his innocence by doing detective work, as the police think its anopen and shut case. What makes this film stand alone is its tenacity. It doesn't let you go, it keeps on trying in the form of the motherattempting to follow every trail. Its a great premise and you are keptguessing throughout. You may be slightly put off by the unusually closenature of the relationship between mother and son, but director BongJoon-ho, who is probably on the short list of excellent contemporarydirectors from Asia, keeps the main focus on the core story, themystery. Highly recommended.
