I caught this at Fantastic Fest 09, and boy is the ninja movie back with a vengeance. In the hands of a big studio, a very capable director (James McTeigue–V For Vendetta), and modern tech/fx/cgi bang-for-the-buck, this might spearhead a resurgence in the subgenre. What to praise? Dozens of unique kills and action scenes. Rain as the charismatic lead. Sho Kusugi in an awesome role. But along the trek to the tournament location, there are numerous hinderances thrown at our “heroes”. Flying trees, disappearing ninjas, burrowing into the ground ninjas, poison-wielding ninjas (did I happen to mention the ninjas???….) try to trip up our worthy combatants at every step. And blood. Lots of it.

There are a lot of beautiful and bloody sword fights. The film knows exactly what it’s trying to do and does that well. I am also impressed at the amount of Ninjas in this film because there’s rarely Ninja in film, or at least good ones I should say and I for one happen to love them so it’s a shame. Martial artist gather for a tournament held every 10 years and the end result is brutal, bloody, amazingly choreographed sword fights between the Japanese/Chinese characters. Ninja’s explode, people talk with their heads having been separated from the rest of their body, and a midget ninja flies everywhere – so if that’s your thing then check this one.

I watched the movie armed with warnings from people who have seen it asgleaned from the message boards itself. It helped that I watched itwithout expecting it to become some inspirational chick flick. It livedto what it was: action, action, action. I was not disappointed. Infact, I think reading some negative reviews before watching lowered myexpectation to the point that I actually found myself liking it. Evengirls who are say, not really into violent movies, can tolerate thisone. Trust me. It is gory, but they're not puke-worthy gory.Action-packed but it has a story. A story of love, self-sacrifice, andstanding up for what you believe in.

One thing I can really commend about the movie is the acting. My biastowards Rain aside(as I'm a fan), I think he did really good! I hope itwill open more doors for him. For someone who's not a martial artist, Ithink he executed his stunts well and clean. Naomie Harris, what can Isay, I have to give it to the girl hands down. Good facial expressions.Sung Kang got me at the opening part when he acted arrogant, veryeffective. And the young Raizos, they were also very good. Even the kidRaizo's facial expression when his feet were lashed by Ozuno, nowthat's a kid that can act! I can give a an 11/10 for the acting alone. The effects were also great, although I can't help but realize that Icraved for more. I honestly think the film was too short that at theend, I said "that was it?". The fight between Takeshi and Raizo wasrather short-lived, I wanted to seem them neck-to-neck for about 20minutes(I'm not counting the flashbacks of course) because I think RickYune was a really effective nemesis for Raizo(Rain). Or maybe because Ijust liked it I didn't notice time pass by?

Of course, I can't help but spot some plot holes. The biggest one Ithink is the fact that ninjas can hear a heartbeat even at a distancebut can't hear summoning helicopters and all that. Oh well. Anotherthumb down I can only give to this is the make-up I guess. Over-the-topto the point that it appeared fake. Like the scars in the body, I thinkthey were overly done.

So in a nutshell, I really found the movie awesome! I watched it twicealready(it helps that I watched it twice so I can fully grasp what Imissed at the first screening) and I'm planning to watch it again.

From the title alone you pretty much know what you're getting into: a100 minute long motion picture featuring ninjas, fighting, ninjas, killing, ninjas, lots of gore, ninjas, over-the-top action and specialeffects…did I mention ninjas?

And that's a good thing. The movie doesn't try to be anything more thanwhat you'd expect it to be. You won't get surprised by any deeprevelations about modern society half-way through the flick. There areno triple subplots you have to wrack your brain around. You get atragic hero, villains, a typical damsel-in-distress, and a prettystraight forward plot.

When I went to this movie, I had fun watching it. Just what you'dexpect from a Joel Silver production. And Rain makes a surprisinglygood b-movie actor. When you watch this movie just sit back and enjoy.
