One platoon, one valley, one year
Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington's year dug in with the Second Platoon in one of Afghanistan's most strategically crucial valleys reveals extraordinary insight into the surreal combination of back breaking labor, deadly firefights, and camaraderie as the soldiers painfully push back the Taliban.

I work at GRITtv where we just interviewed Tim Hetherington on themaking and mind behind Restrepo!
Afghanistan is now the longest war in United States history. Soldiersare shipping out every day, institutionalized to fight the elusive “warin Afghanistan.” Civilians and villagers are caught between the Talibanand the United States. Often, soldiers are too busy trying to surviveto ask the metaphysically political questions like, “why are we here?”
Stories about politics are rarely stories about people, but storiesabout people are often stories about politics. Restrepo is the title ofa film by Tim Hetherington telling one of these stories. Restrepo wasthe medic. He was killed early in the deployment and became a metaphorfor every soldier in the platoon. Now, Tim Hetherington joins us in thestudio to describe his experiences as a war reporter creating adocumentary film called Restrepo, not about the politics of Afghanistanbut about the soldiers affected by politics in Afghanistan.

Recent (say in the last ten years) Fiction films about war, BLACK HAWKDOWN for example, have taken the same approach this films takes. Themen are men doing a “job” and earn our respect on that level. The factthey do “the job” is what earns our respect. The fact that War isn’tyour usual job is not questioned, not by the filmmakers or by the mendoing the job.

The realism of the material is as vividly terrifying as it captures the gravity of the situation’s very essence. Though the film talks about war, the filmmakers made it a point to strip it of all political statements to cater to a broader audience regardless which side they are on. [...]
