Note: these comments refer to the "unrated" 122 min. cut of the film.

Went into this DVD expecting the worst–lame horror/porn. What asurprise! It's not only good, it's one of the better of the genre overthe last 10 years or so.

The vampires are never referred to as vampires, it's simply called a"condition". Typical mythology like mirrors, immortality, drinkinghuman blood, arrow through the heart, and "daylight problems" stillexist. But these creatures are not super human, their only true gift isimmortality.

The characters are well designed around the actors who play them. LucyLiu plays a reporter looking into "goth" cults and finding more thanshe bargained for. Her performance shows some nice range, especiallyduring the early part of the story during her discovering the truthabout herself. Michael Chiklis plays a tough, vengeful, hard drinkingcop–a role he's all but perfected. Carla Gugino has a small role asthe femme fatale (surprise, surprise) but gives us a taste of the humanbeing behind the monster. And long time character actor Mako, in hislast role:(, portrays a disturbing and charming familiar-like characterwho's part butler, part mentor. Even Robert Forster shows up for acameo, I really wanted more of him in this film. The rest of the castworks well, no real turkeys here.

The plot is really the weakest link, a typical revenge thriller. Butthe out-of-sequence editing (the director's unrated version) isspot-on. And the production values are quite strong. Writer/directorSebastian Gutierrez, the guy who wrote "Snakes on a Plane", gives uscliché-ridden, hokey dialog and we forgive him for it because it'soften tongue-in-cheek funny. The nudity/sex is downplayed, much less ofit here than in the Underworld films. I prefer these less romanticizedversions of vampires, they're creatures who take what they want–lovenever factors into it. All in all a good "graphic novel" typemovie–with average substance but great style.

What sucks is that theatrical release was apparently poorly cut, and itperformed badly at the box-office. So the nice set-up for a sequel isprobably wasted.

So final verdict–7 out of 10. Better than Underworld 2 and Blade 3.Underworld and Blade 1 and 2 still trump it, however. A good rental forgenre/Lucy Liu fans.

It was a vampire flick with a lot of different views on vampires…Lucy Lui was obviously gorgeous in it. The acting was good. But whatdisappointed me so was the lack of story. Yeah there is a "back story"and a "revenge story" but no… "STORY". You know? They don't explainSadie Blakes (Lucy Lui's character) job, they don't explain their newdefinition of vampire, the flash backs are randomly in and out so youdon't know which side is up. Its a nice kick back film, but nothing toget excited about. I'm hoping there's a part two to explain all of thatstuff… oh and the dude from the Shield, he did a very good job in hisrole. But again… no plot OR character development.

OK, I read up on most of the comments on here before I watched this'film', and I thought…OK, so it might not be one of the greatestmovies of all time but it will be entertaining…how WRONG was I??

Honestly, I could tell you the plot but there really is no point, it'scheesy, boring and very poorly done…almost like a poor man's…nowait that's too high class..lets go for; a down and out's Buffy thevampire slayer, and even he would admit it's a bit rubbish!

I seriously do not understand why Lucy Lui agreed to do this film, allI can think of is that she just wanted to pick up an easy pay check.Yes her acting was OK in this film..but that doesn't make up foreveryone else's poor acting (including that bloke who is only famousfor being married to Jessica "I'm so thick" Simpson), it also doesn'tmake up for the bad plot..

Seriously, if you find yourself tempted to watch this film…go take abath, go shopping, go do anything…you'll feel as violated as I do ifu take the plunge and sit through it..

    truly, truly awful.

I saw this for the first time last week on satellite. Sure there are afew flaws like a couple of choppy and illogical transitions, butoverall, I'd say this is EASILY the best vampire movie I've ever seen. And except for one scene where nudity was called for, and Lucy Liuchickened out, I'd say this is the most impressive role Lucy's ever hadas well. ALmost every aspect of this film works, from the screenplay tothe music and cinematography. This film makes horror out of someonebeing turned into one of the creatures of the night, quite unwillingly. And it is something this ensemble succeed in conveying perfectly well.A lot of credit has to go to the director who's made some unusual butcanny choices here. But then there's Lucy who gets and approves of whatthe director and writers are trying for, probably for the first time inthe movies. I found huge swaths pretty exhilarating and far morechilling than the usual metro-sexual type approcah. This directordeserves to land some big projects. And Lucy has a wonderful eye fordetail and bodily changes. Some of the excellent supporting staff werefairly wasted but it was still good to see their parts.
