How do you save humanity when the only thing that's real is you?
People are living their lives remotely from the safety of their own homes via robotic surrogates -- sexy, physically perfect mechanical representations of themselves. It's an ideal world where crime, pain, fear and consequences don't exist. When the first murder in years jolts this utopia, FBI agent Greer (Willis) discovers a vast conspiracy behind the surrogate phenomenon and must abandon his own surrogate, risking his life to unravel the mystery.

I loved this movie, but must confess I was surprised how much. I didNOT need another movie about the future— "Hey, lookee here, thefuture is full of technology robbing our souls, and aren't we ever soclever to be making such keen observations about that!" So I waspleasantly surprised to find that this film was great. So good, infact, it was uncanny. I am iffy on sci-fi in general. Some I like, someI don't. BUT— "Surrogates" was bright, jazzy, fast-moving, exciting, and entrancing. It had dash, depth, and was wonderful entertainment!
To illustrate my point by way of comparison— The sci-fi genre is kindof done to death, don't you think? And often trite. I mean no offence, but IMHO, 2004's "I, Robot," for example, was ludicrous. Reallyunbelievable and stupid. Spielberg's 2001 "Artificial Intelligence" wasmuch better, but even that was cumbersome and smothering with itsself-important "heavy" social themes that would have seemed "far out"in 1967, but simply plodded along as rather stilted and silly in thiscentury.
I checked the cast list for this movie, and noticed it wasinternational, although all spoke with flawless American accents. Thedirector, Willis, and a few others were American, but the leadingladies and others were from Australia, England, and Austria, etc. Whata mix! That's all fine… but it makes me speculate on the purpose.Haven't we seen a lot of that in the last 10-12 years? That is, Britishwomen playing Americans, Americans playing Brits, Aussies and Kiwispopping up as various nationalities on screen. That's all great— butit seems like it can't just be coincidence that the director could onlyfind an actor from "country A" to fill the role for a character from"country B." Each country has a wealth of talent already there andavailable, and the genuine need to import a specific foreign actor israre.
I suspect it's that even when a foreign accent is adopted by an actorflawlessly, there will nonetheless be a faint, unconscious and subtlehint of the foreign remaining. They will sound authentic, yetdifferent, somehow… exotic perhaps. Am I imaging that?
Anyway, this film is extremely well done, and is very worth your whileto visit the cinema for a night out. Regardless of your favouritegenre, or taste regarding sci-fi or thrillers or "social comment" or"comment on life" or philosophical ruminations, you will like, andmaybe love, this movie.

I watched this movie on Friday. It was a great flick. I think this should have be the box office topper, but it was ‘cloudy with a chance of meatballs’. Anyways, if you haven’t seen this go watch it!
