The Karate Kid (2010)

12-year-old Dre Parker could've been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother's latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying – and the feeling is mutual – but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre's feelings make an enemy of the class bully, Cheng. In the land of kung fu, Dre knows only a little karate, and Cheng puts “the karate kid” on the floor with ease. With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han, who is secretly a master of kung fu. As Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.

In perhaps the most vulgar and grotesque example of Hollywood nepotismimaginable, Will Smith produces a ridiculous rehash of the KARATE KIDwith his spoiled brat, Jaden, in the lead. Sadly, it also showcasesJackie Chan in another of his dismal attempts at a kiddie flick.Hopefully, this kind of dubious project will bomb at the box officelike Jaden's other laughable remake, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL(with Keanu the Alien), then perhaps Jada-Pinkette will send her peskypill of a son to his room with a spanking. For those interested, itreally should be called THE KUNG-FU KID, since our fashionable, bulliedboy is subjected to a Chinese culture clash (woefully unwarranted) andeducated in that country's leading martial art. Beyond that, it's justa crass rehash of the original, with all the trite, boring platitudesabout growing up, falling in love, earning respect and blah-blah-blahplayed out in an exceedingly more tasteless fashion, since movies likethis have only gotten remarkably cruddier since the eighties. This newKARATE KID is a galling piece of exploitation and marketing that youcannot say enough mean and nasty things about!

GaryVidmar, you have to understand that your point of view is only shared by the few. your comments are very out of context….if you had watched the movie as a true critic you would not say the same. the movie was a continuation of the original movies, only this time it takes place in china. all of the karate kid movies have a very similar story line and plot, and i have been to china and japan before, not bad places but if you actually talked to the local people there and the kids there you would know that the martial arts is very big there and that the scenes depicted in the movie do happen every day. so i say you sir are full or crap about the movie… it is very accurate to what does happen and it takes a extreme and throws it into the faces of the public with an old-school title. well worth the money to go see it on opening day.

Wow, Gary… You must be the life of the party. Just the kind of wet blanket everyone loves seeing a movie with.
I hope you don’t have children yourself. If you do I feel truly sorry for them. Send them my condolences.

    Cheer up, Gary.

    mmm,ok it’s good but…i have seen better fims… like harry potter…and others.

  27. Vladkyle says:

For those who have studied the martial arts, this movie has, like all things in life, little hidden messages that resound truth for those willing to listen to them. Having just seen the commercials, I figured it would be just another kiddie movie rehash of the original(s), with Jackie fulfilling the Disney-now-owns-your-soul-and-career typecast he’s fallen into in this decade. I was very surprised and pleased, after having seen it, to be mistaken. Martial arts, kung-fu, whatever name your language has for it, lives in all cultures, and this is a beautifully done telling of the truth; thanks for setting the record straight Jackie, because in the age of UFC and MMA, all martial arts is becoming a sport in the public eye and people need to know the truth; true martial arts is not for violence, or beating others in any form; it is the way of peace, love and harmony, and it applies to every aspect of your life
