The Road (2009)

The Road (2009)
In a moment the world changed forever.

A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind and water. It is cold enough to crack stones, and, when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the warmer south, although they don't know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing: just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless cannibalistic bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a rusting shopping cart of scavenged food--and each other.

Several of m y friends and co-workers have seen the movie and/orrecently read the book and wondered what happened to the planet. Whileneither the book nor movie provides any specifics, I will share mythoughts based on the data available in both sources of material. Themost likely explanation is a Mantle Eruption. We know of one such eventon the planet approximately 750 million years ago. As a result, Earthbecame a solid ball of ice with oceans freezing to over a mile inthickness. The story does little to explain what happened but we dopick up bits and pieces along the way. We are led to believe the eventhappened quickly with little time to prepare. The sky was completelyobscured and the planet's temperature is rapidly dropping. The earth isgenerally covered in ash and there are continual earthquakes suggestingheavy shifting of the tectonic plates. The event occurred within 10years of the man and boy's journey. During that time, all wildlife wasdestroyed which indicates something occurred on a global scale largerthan any mankind can produce (neither of the source material refers toany radiation hazards eliminating a nuclear strike). Along the way theboy questions what is on the other side of the ocean. While it is purespeculation, the father's answer of "nothing" might indicate such eventoccurred on the other side of the planet and thus nothing survived. However, one supporting statement in the movie refers to a brilliantflash a light followed by two smaller ones. While this may support theother two theories as well, it is possible the eruptions and subsequentfollow-up events could have been witnessed by some individuals andreported from far away. The next most likely possibility is an impactfrom a massive space object. Such an event would support the threeflashes of brilliant light. This would align with the entrance into ouratmosphere and, if large enough, could have shifted the earth causingearthquakes, volcanoes and explain the ash. This would also support the"nothing" statement in the movie (although the father's later storyabout another father and son sitting on the opposite shore was likelyjust something to keep his son going) as the impact may have struck theopposite of the planet destroying most things at the point of impact. Both the mantel eruption and impact of a space object are equallyplausible. The last likely scenario would be a mass corneal ejection(nothing to do with the recent movies dealing with this subject). Whileit would explain many of the events and the general lifelessness of theplanet, there are a few holes in that theory such as why the planet israpidly growing colder, the experiencing of earthquakes, and thegeneral level of the ocean remaining constant. While it really isn'timportant to the storyline of an overall solid book and above averagemovie, those that are curious have something to think about. As for thepossibility of a military event, it is highly unlikely. None of thesource material ever refers to the military, and the fairly accuratemovie doesn't depict any military vehicles, civil defense, and theaforementioned radiation areas. In essence, the earth suffered anatural event (internally or earth bound objects) and life willeventually die out. Because of man's ability to think and reason aswell as the availability of limited tools and technology, he willlikely last longer than most mammals but ultimately suffer the samefate.

Interesting film, highlights are fascinating cinematography and superbacting by two out of three of the leads.

Cinematography uses low lighting, nearly achromatic palette with somebrown, highlight some yellow and red for fire or blood, with an effectnever dull and sometimes haunting.

I predict this picture wins best cinematography at the Academy Awardsby the way.

Acting by Viggo Morensen as the lead is very strong, as is supportingrole by Kodi Smit-McPhee. Charlize Theron unfortunately is not crediblein her scenes, harming them. A few instances of "Hollywood style"acting of "key moments" and overacting, but very rare – actingthroughout, except by Theron, was of a high order.

Storyline was quite strong, ending was however off-key, too pat andunrealistic given the frame of the movie.

Tone and texture with its acceptance of the present, focus on immediatefuture in a decimated world, and little attention paid to the pastreminded me of On the Beach.

hey ron you’re wrong. you know why? coz the author doesn’t say what happened and he doesnt want anybody to know what happened, therefore, no matter how much you prognosticate and no matter how many theories you manage to pull out of your ass, you will always be wrong, because it’s the author’s world he made it not you meathead. besides it’s not the point of the story, you should be discussing with your little fag friends why people gave up their humanity and turned to cannibalism, and whether or not your merry fairy band of fags would do the same.

  4. Flyn67 Says:

In your attempt to draw attention to the real message of the story, usuk, you have singularly defined who among us would give up their humanity and become the cannibal. Moronic and ironic at the same time. Now that’s talent.
