Scully works as a staff physician at a Catholic hospital. Her focus these days is on a young boy with an incurable brain disease. Administration wants to give up on him. Scully, who feels a special bond with the boy, does not. Meanwhile, Mulder's focus is on clipping newspaper articles about the paranormal and throwing pencils into his ceiling. First off, I'm not sure why they bothered to revisit X-Files at all. Iwas a huge X-Files fan and still am. I saw most of the episodes (untilthe very last seasons) when they originally ran, and my girlfriend andI have recently been re-watching every season in order, so we arefairly up to par on our X-Files. Anyways, the first movie was prettygood. It wasn't great, but it was along the same lines as the show atthe time and it was fairly enjoyable. This new movie, however, is atbest maybe as good as a crappy episode (but extended to an hour and ahalf or so). It doesn't even use the typical X-Files formula, which isto solve unexplained phenomenon with a combination of Molder's naiveoptimism & Scully's bull headed rationalism. Instead they have apsychic priest that they have leading them to clues. Of course Molderwants to believe and Scully is skeptical, but it seems more about thedrama and dynamics between the two. This could just as easily be anepisode of any old crime investigation show. It certainly doesn't meritmovie potential. Instead of the usual dynamics between the duo we nowhave a bunch of emotional / drama going on… which could have workedif the plot hadn't been so weak, but as it stands it just doesn't workwell or feel like X-Files at all. I am hugely disappointed by thismovie. Why resurrect a series that is still gaining in cult-classicvalue and with such a great back log of material only to tarnish itwith this crap? I seriously believe Chris Carter just had this episodealready written and never used it for the series because it wasn't eventhat great then. I can't imagine he actually sat down to write a newX-Files movie and thought this would be good. Maybe he just needed aquick paycheck? I want to believe Chris tried to make a good movie, butI'm not convinced by the evidence
If your a hard core fan your goingto watch this, but be warned, it's a disappointment… if your not afan, well, you might find it to be a mediocre movie at best. Doyourself a favor and have some classic episodes ready after you watchthis to get the bad taste out of your mouth!
OK, sexual problems or not, I adore David Duchovny. And theScully/Mulder romance is always sweet.
But when Scully is first approached to get Mulder involved with themissing FBI agent case, she acts as if she's going to a stranger'shouse. You get the feeling she and Mulder haven't seen each other inyears when she walks into his house. And yet, midway through the movie, she says that they are living together.
And when the girl's car is forced off the road by the truck–the copsdon't notice that her window was broken in backwards, or that there ispaint on the side that the truck hit.
And the hospital's administrator-priest says he is determining medicalpractice by appealing to "the highest authority" and an entireconference table of doctors, Scully included, don't protest.
And the "Russians" are using German words. "Verstehe." And why wouldScully care why the bugger priest said "Don't give up." Why does sheget so immature about it? Like she needs his approval or recognition.Isn't she more together than that after all these years? And whenthey're chasing the Ruskie through town, have they never heard ofshooting him in the leg? OK, now i'm going to finish watching thispreposterousness because I'm in a hotel with limited cable.
They could have done this earlier, better, and made it either about theAlien invasion or some supernatural horror thing. Instead-we get abunch of Russkis running around British Columbia *Cough* "Virginia"-yeah sure-harvesting people's organs for black market purposes, keeping really mean dogs around to guard them/test on/ and ummmmmmthere's some child molesting priests hanging around w/ ESP who havescotch accents and live in a group pervert home.
It all doesn't lead up to much-lotsa running around in the snow, someshootings, Amanda Peet beings tossed off a roof, gratuitousfrankenstein operations on people's necks (were they staying aliveheadless? was unclear on all that), and of course, the obligatoryrapper as main character cliché too. Perfect.
They're not really sure how much Moulder and Scully have been togetherit seems in the scripting, you don't get a good feel for what Moulder'sbeen up to since the end of the show—and then there's Mitch Pileggijust kinda showing up 75% of the way thru just to help save the day.
That's–it, really. I kinda liked it, honestly, but it doesn't evenrate w/ an average episode of the show. And you can see why it didn'tdo so well too.
** outta ****, there's potential there for one more, but they'd betterget back to what made the show work. This was a misfire.
Went into this truly excited, die hard X-File fan. Came out of itterribly disappointed and honestly angry – it is as if Chris completelyforgot what X-Files was all about. We were left wondering how is thisan X-Files movie? It dragged on and on, spent more time spinning itswheels and building up to nowhere, no major mystery, no "x-file"component. Felt like a soap opera! The bad guys were not evenimpressive or truly scary. A two headed dog shown in blurry mouthchomping shots? Really? That's all you've got?? Whether the ex-priestwas truly psychic or a fraud is even left up in the air. I wish someonehad told me to skip this movie and I could have finished out the serieswith the first movie as my final memory. Now THAT was true X-Files!! Doyourself a favor – do NOT see this movie – go rent the first one againand stop there.
