I have to admit that Turistas is probably if not the goriest, one of thegoriest movies ever, and for me there is a thing as TOO MUCH gore!Ithought this film was good, and it had somewhat bad acting, and somewhatof a terrible plot, but still it wasn't all THAT horrible.I didn't thinkit would've been as good as it turned out to be,and despite theconstant killing and slaughtering the atmosphere was kind of pretty.Ithought that some things in this movie could have been avoided and thatthere were some scenes in which I was yelling at the TV,because thestupid people wouldn't do what was right in front of them!!!I do notsee why this film is so lowly rated, but I guess if it can't get higherthan that it is a good rating, because I actually thought it would beLOWER!!!!This film was a pretty good, cheap, slasher film that needed alot of changes, but still had really good story.

Turistas is a genuinely terrible movie: soulless, vapid and derivativeon every level. Now, I'm not saying it's inept. In fact, Turistas is avery professional-looking piece of work. But that slick, commercialsurface is really just a matter of money. It can be bought, and as faras I'm concerned, has very little to do with the actual quality of afilm. Turistas has all the integrity and personality of an Audicommercial. Worse, it shamelessly exploits American xenophobia to anear-racist degree.

Basically what you have is yet another a by-the-numbers Hostel rip-off.American (and English and Australian and Swedish) tourists are luredwith the promise of endless partying and ripe, available, "native"flesh to a deathtrap where they're butchered for their organs simplyfor the crime of being "gringos". From the opening credits (a montageof passports and "scary foreign horrors", scored to upbeat Braziliandance pop) the movie makes no bones about its agenda: foreigners areweird and scary, and if you don't watch your back, they'll kill you.

From the initial set-up, we go through a predictable build-up to thehalf-way point, where the nasty stuff really kicks in. There's ahalfhearted attempt made here to excuse the basic xenophobia of thestoryline by suggesting that the villains are simply trying to combatAmerican exploitation. But it's far too little, far too late. Itdoesn't change the fact that we're being asked to side with thebasically innocent white folks in their battle against a bunch ofdark-skinned maniacs. Remember who the "good guys" are in thissituation: conspicuously white Americans, Britishes and even a coupleSwedes thrown in for measure.

Now I might be willing to excuse the film's cynical exploitation ofpost 9-11 anxiety if it were actually, you know, smart, or scary, orunique, or … anything, really. But it isn't. Turistas is about asbrave and intelligent as an episode of Mama's Family. One for the trashheap of history.

    2/10

Upon arriving at this movie by flipping through the HBO channels, Ithought, this is going to blow big time. I stand corrected.

I believe 4.7 is a bit low for this movie to be rated simply becausethere are plenty of other movies at that level that are FAR worse thanthis one.

Duhamel does a surprisingly good job in this movie as does the rest ofthe cast. It is not something I would say is a must see but if it is onagain I would certainly give it a second viewing. I think most peoplewere just assuming this movie was going to suck and gave it a badreview without even watching.

This film doesn't deserve the low rating it has. Believe me, I haveseen hundreds of horror films and this one is no where near as bad aspeople are led think. While it's not the greatest, it certainly isn'tthe worst. There are some great gore effects, the acting issurprisingly good, the directing and writing are chilling. And most ofall the story seems realistic. Stuff like this does happen… all thetime.

I think most people hated this film because it came out around the timewhen torture/horror films were starting to get a worse rep than theyalready had.

Give the film a chance with an open mind. You won't be disappointed.

  5. Spaceygirl (melanie.diesel@bbraun.co.za) Says:

Turistas is in a word, Awful. With a laughable script containingthrowaway lines, its clichéd and hackneyed. There is zero characterdevelopment which leaves

the audience unable to empathise with any of them. The acting isdeplorable, Josh Duhamel simply phoning in a performance.

Melissa George, of Amytiville Horror 'fame' is

    a horrible, horrible actress

and the character of Finn has to be one of the most irritating in moviehistory! The cinematography is pretty, however, and the best thingabout the movie. Whoever greenlit this rubbish should be lined up

    against a wall and shot!
