Twilight (2008)

Twilight (2008)
When you can live forever what do you live for?

Bella Swan has always been a little bit different. Never one to run with the crowd, Bella never cared about fitting in with the trendy, plastic girls at her Phoenix, Arizona high school. When her mother remarried and Bella chooses to live with her father in the rainy little town of Forks, Washington, she didn't expect much of anything to change. But things do change when she meets the mysterious and dazzlingly beautiful Edward Cullen. For Edward is nothing like any boy she's ever met. He's nothing like anyone she's ever met, period. He's intelligent and witty, and he seems to see straight into her soul. In no time at all, they are swept up in a passionate and decidedly unorthodox romance - unorthodox because Edward really isn't like the other boys. He can run faster than a mountain lion. He can stop a moving car with his bare hands. Oh, and he hasn't aged since 1918. Like all vampires, he's immortal. That's right - vampire. But he doesn't have fangs - that's just in the movies. And he doesn't drink human blood, though Edward and his family are unique among vampires in that lifestyle choice. To Edward, Bella is that thing he has waited 90 years for - a soul mate. But the closer they get, the more Edward must struggle to resist the primal pull of her scent, which could send him into an uncontrollable frenzy. Somehow or other, they will have to manage their unmanageable love. But when unexpected visitors come to town and realize that there is a human among them Edward must fight to save Bella? A modern, visual, and visceral Romeo and Juliet story of the ultimate forbidden love affair - between vampire and mortal.

Do please color me bemused and uninterested. "Twilight," adapted (fromthe first volume of an immensely popular series of fantasy romancenovels aimed at tween- and teenaged girls) by Melissa "Dexter"Rosenberg, a dance major turned writer/producer, and directed byCatherine "Thirteen" Hardwicke, was a remarkably successful seat-fillerlast year ($190mil+ on a budget of $35mil+) that's about as bloodlessand fangless as the "vegetarian" vampire our self-involved littleheroine falls for. I realize I'm not a member of the film's targetaudience, but there it was at my local library, free as free can be, soI thought I'd give it a shot and see what all the lucrative fuss wasabout.

    Not much.

As a romance, "Twilight" is tepid at best. Other than staring at eachother with a variety of expressions that range from constipated totoothlessly suggestive, the leads have no apparent chemistry (and thisdespite their apparent off-screen relationship). Their motivations arean amorphous murk. Other than his James Dean-ish good looks and funkyeyeballs, what is it she sees in this icy-cold oaf? Did she reallyenjoy kissing refrigerated lips? And why is this inhuman Dorian Grey sotaken with a simpleton teenager? What, simply because he can't read hermind? I suppose this is all silliness that only a teenaged girl canunderstand; I sure don't. Give me Romeo and Juliet any day; heck, ifyou want vampire romance, give me "Near Dark" or "Once Bitten," or even"Fright Night." Beyond that, Kristen "Panic Room" Stewart is still anappealing young actress, and I'll watch about anything she's in, evenif she hasn't refined her ability to choose prime roles yet. I can'tsay the same for Robert "Harry Potter…" Pattinson, who left me ascold as his ostensible character; right now he's one of those actorswho makes you think, "The lights are on, but nobody's home." Theproduction values were fine, Eliot "Vamp" Davis' camera-wrangling wasgood, if at times a bit too music video-ish, the art direction and soon and so forth, all good for a multi-million dollar picture, but inthe end…? In the end, it's all for nothing, because the story istedious drivel, most of the characters cardboard cut-outs, the entireconceptual framework unconvincing (sparkly vampires that run aroundduring the day?)…in an oft-repeated phrase of mine: think Sturgeon'sRevelation. "Twilight" is junk food disguised with an artful salad, empty calories that provide no nourishment whatsoever.

I can only imagine what deviant impulses have led the older males onthis site to rate this thing higher than their younger cohorts(unsurprisingly, the females are just the opposite).

You can bet I'll be avoiding the inevitable sequel(s), and unlessyou're an adolescent female, I'm betting you will be, too.

A mate and I watched this film, and it did not take us long to concludethat it was painfully awful to watch. The vampire's within the filmcannot be considered to be vampire's, yes they have all the typicalcharacteristics of a vampire. But the lore is still out of sync. Withinthis film vampire's are created via a different means to that ofDracula, and the most important difference is the idea that vampire'scan walk around in the daylight, and most certainly do not sparkle.

This though is not the main problem with the film, as you can considerthe idea of creative licencing, and maybe it would not matter if therewas any explanation as to why this is the case. No there are other morepressing problems which must be addressed.

When you watch the idea of werewolves and vampires being in differingtribes and against one another, you can't help but think back toanother vampire film which has a certain storyline that is similar.Underworld? Yes, you were thinking it too. Then again at least theunderworld vampire's were not all depressives who wanted to end theirlives, like Edward Cullen seems to wish to do.

More problems with this film? The script writing was terrible. Theacting was even more terrible, but then you can't expect good acting insuch a situation. The film is completely unbelievable, especially whenyou consider Bella Swann is possibly the most uninteresting characterin a long history of uninteresting characters. There is no personalitythere with her, yet everybody seems to wish to be her friend, andinstantly loves her, and most of all there is no chemistry between themain characters.

Honestly, I would have given this no stars if I was able to. It was sopoor it was just ridiculous. I would not recommend this film toanybody. And if I do, I would only recommend it to teenage girls underthe age of 13, because that is who it is aimed at.

    #2 Of my top 10

In my Opinion the Characters were well-picked & they acted their rollesas well as it should be.

I had'nt read the book till I saw the movie but After I saw this,I feltI have read the novel Thousand times. You know why?Because the title wasrather repetitious.

Stephanie Meyer chose the best scenes of all the Romance vampire booksever.but generally I liked it.No….something more than that…I FELLIN LOVE WITH THIS masterpiece.

I think this is the most sucsessful Teen,Vampire-Romance of all timenot only my opinion…many…many teen people

Well…let's see…what about the characters in the movie?

Bella…what about her?actually Bella is described as being veryfair-skinned with dark brown hair and chocolate brown eyes and aheart-shaped face. She has a wide forehead, large, wide-spaced,doe-like eyes, and prominent cheekbones. She is 5'4' , but notmuscular, and weighs 110 pounds. She does not think of herself asbeautiful, but she is alone in this opinion.

EdWard Cullen…as I see if you go in any America's high schools yousee girls are dying for him.But you know…I'm not really a huge fan ofhim…But I don't hate him.I have his poster on my room wall justbecause he is unstandabe…You know I don't see my room at all…I justsleep in there…Thats because I have his poster on my wall…It's alittle bit funny…this feeling inside :) ) :) ) :) )

This movie was terrible. If you read the books and watched the movieand liked it, you didn't pay attention to detail. Bella is supposed tobe some klutzy, pale, sarcastic girl from Arizona. She is supposed tobe a very giving person and puts others before her. She ALSO issupposed to be more on the emotional side of things, thats her awkwardtrait. Edward is supposed to be very protective of her and very suave. He looks even more awkward than she did!! He is a vampire, they are(supposedly) these charming, witty people. He is also very sarcasticwith her.

The movie messed up some one the things. Dates and time. In the bookBella says she went to Forks every summer until she finally told herdad that she didn't like it there so they vacationed in Californiainstead… In the movie they messed that up. Jacob is supposed to tellher all about Edward and his family, she flirts with him to get theinformation.

Where the heck did Lauren go?! Jessica (in the movie) was supposed tobe a combination of both. Book Jessica was phony. She pretended to benice and friendly with Bella because she noticed that EVERYBODY likedthe new girl. Lauren just hated Bella.

Kristen Stewert is apparently the greatest actress of our time… HOWIS THAT POSSIBLE?!?!?! She doesn't show emotion, her scared voice andher happy voice sound the same. The only good scene in the movie waswhen she went to find James. And she blinked, looked around way toomuch. SHe bit her lip (which is a quality of Bella, she took it way toofar.) and breathed heavily. Bella goes through random bursts ofexcitement in the movie, especially when she finds that Edward stayedthe night as promised..

The first kiss happens after the Meadow, not in her room.

Victoria doesn't talk until the third book. Rosalie only talks once ormaybe twice in the first book.

Alice and Jasper have a more emotional Connection. Emmet and Rosaliehave a more physical romance. Jasper comforts Bella a heck of a lotmore in the book. "I know what your thinking. And your wrong. You areworth it." (He said that to Bella after the whole thing with James.)

THE ONLY GOOD THING IS THE MUSIC. I would recommend the soundtrack, itis awesome.

I'd like to group it as a vampire movie, for the first 15 mins of themovie or maybe 20mins. And hardly can i go on with the movie.

The male actor was like acting cool from all the beginning, seems like"am just so special, and a prince material.. and so on". I liked thegirl in other movies, such as "the fierce people", and some scene in"jumper", but i couldn't really focus on her acting skill in this one.

Let's go on with the guy, he's simply showing off his special abilityin an old way, to save a girl from a car dashing around madly.(payattention: in campus). Isn't it the most dramatic way for two personsto meet/fall into each other? the difference is: the girl was stillacting cool and questionable even when the hero had saved her.. thiskind of hero i've seen since a kid, but considering today's youngpeople, this movie might also be nice to stand in difference angle tosee a love story.

I couldn't tell the rest of the movie, sorry bout that.

I read with a certain amount of sadness the negative comments postedhere about this film, and note that most of the criticism pertains tothe fact that this movie as one "enlightened" critic put it "has"woman" written all over it". How sad that in this era of supposedfemale emancipation, that any film that does not cater to theadolescent male need for blood, gore and action, is vilified. Thismovie is tender, atmospheric and extremely entertaining. It is notanother boring special effects movie, a cop movie, a war movie, or anyof the other endlessly boring (to me) movies that spewed like bile byHollywood.

A lot of the vampire fans are totally upset because the Vampires inthis movie are not out killing people and because they are not thestandard gore film Vampires… I wonder what all the fuss is about?Every Vampire film tends to change and modify the Vampire legend. Insome movies they are killed just by exposing them to light. In somemovies only a steak to the heart can do the job. There really is nostandard behavior for Vampires people make it up… because Vampiresdon't really exist! It's a STORY people.

So in my mind it's just that this movie is more poetic and is something"girlie girls" of which I am a proud card carrying member, can love. Soof course it is despised because I guess all forms of entertainment areexpected to cater to males and male tastes.

Anyway I loved it and that is the first time I have been able to standa movie about Vampires.
